About The Safari Journal

The Safari Journal exists for one moment in trip planning: when you've decided Africa is next, and you need straight answers before committing serious money. Where should we go? When? What will it really cost? Is it worth it?

What we do

The Safari Journal is an independent editorial guide to luxury safari travel in Africa. We cover the questions serious travelers ask before committing $20,000 or more to a trip:

  • What a luxury safari really costs, including the park fees, concession fees, levies and light-aircraft flights that brochure prices leave out.
  • When to go, month by month and country by country.
  • How destinations compare, in plain trade-offs rather than superlatives.
  • Practical details, such as luggage limits, tipping, malaria and booking lead times.

How we research

Every guide is built from primary and current sources. These include park authorities' published tariffs (the Rwanda Development Board, Uganda Wildlife Authority, TANAPA and Kenya's reserve authorities), lodges' published rate sheets, and current-year operator data. We quote fees as ranges, date every page, and revise pages when tariffs change. Read our full methodology.

We don't publish invented reviews, testimonials or star ratings, and we never claim firsthand stays we haven't made.

How we're funded

The Safari Journal is reader-supported through a referral partnership with Safari.com, a specialist luxury safari company. If you enquire through one of our "Plan my safari" links and later book, Safari.com pays us a referral fee. That fee comes out of their margin. It doesn't change the price you pay, and it doesn't change what we write. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
